Chapter 3

The fever began on a Thursday.
By Friday, Noah was glassy-eyed and curled beneath a blanket on the living room couch, clutching his stuffed triceratops.
Claire called the pediatric nurse line twice.
She kept notes on a yellow pad.
Temperature.
Medication time.
Water intake.
Breathing.
Responsiveness.
Daniel came home late and stepped over the blanket pile like Noah was a mess in the walkway.
“Still sick?”
Claire looked up.
“He’s worse.”
Daniel glanced at Noah from across the room.
“He’s sleeping.”
“He keeps waking confused.”
Daniel loosened his tie.
“Claire, kids get fevers.”
She wanted to throw the thermometer at him.
Instead, she took a breath and said, “I need you here.”
He looked uncomfortable.
Then his phone buzzed.
Vanessa.
Claire saw the name.
Daniel saw that she saw.
“She’s worried about Lily.”
“Noah is your son.”
“That’s not fair.”
Fair.
The word nearly made Claire laugh.
Daniel answered the call in the kitchen.
His voice softened immediately.
Claire sat beside Noah, stroking his damp hair while listening to her husband become gentle for another woman’s child.
By Saturday afternoon, Noah’s body suddenly went rigid in Claire’s arms.
She screamed Daniel’s name.
He came running.
For one second, fear cracked his face.
Then his phone rang again.
Vanessa.
Claire shouted, “Do not answer that.”
He answered.
Vanessa was crying.
Lily was coughing.
Daniel made a decision so quickly Claire barely understood it was happening.
“We’re all going to the hospital,” he said.
“All?”
“I’ll drive.”
Noah twitched weakly against Claire’s chest.
Her world narrowed to his breathing.
She should have called 911 herself.
She would later punish herself for that thought until Anna, her sister, told her, “You trusted his father to be his father.”
That was all Claire had done.

And it nearly destroyed her.
