Chapter 2

Noah had always been the child people called sensitive.

He noticed everything.

The way Claire’s voice changed when she was tired.

The way Daniel checked his phone during dinner.

The way Vanessa’s name made the air in the house tighten.

At five years old, Noah did not understand affairs, emotional distance, or betrayal.

He only understood that Daddy used to build pillow forts with him and now said, “Not tonight,” without looking away from his screen.

Claire noticed first.

Mothers always notice before anyone admits there is something to notice.

Daniel’s late meetings became later.

His business trips gained extra nights.

His phone faced down on tables.

His patience with Noah shortened.

When Noah cried, Daniel sighed.

When Noah wanted to be held, Daniel said he was too big.

When Noah got sick, Daniel acted personally inconvenienced by the fever.

“He’s always dramatic when you baby him,” Daniel said one night.

Claire stood in the hallway holding a thermometer.

“He has 103.”

“Then give him medicine.”

“I did.”

“Then stop panicking.”

That was Daniel’s favorite word for Claire.

Panicking.

Not noticing.

Not protecting.

Not responding.

Panicking.

Vanessa Reed entered their lives as a coworker who needed help after divorce.

Then she became a friend.

Then Lily’s asthma was mentioned so often that Daniel seemed to know her inhaler schedule better than Noah’s pediatrician appointments.

Claire tried to speak once.

“You run to Vanessa every time she calls.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Her daughter has breathing problems.”

“Our son has problems too.”

“Our son has you.”

At the time, Claire thought he meant she was a good mother.

Later, she understood the truth.

Daniel had reassigned responsibility.

Noah was hers.
