Chapter 6

Dr. Elena Marsh did not speak like television doctors.
No dramatic promises.
No false comfort.
No speeches over monitors.
She asked sharp questions and expected answers.
“How long since the first seizure activity?”
Claire tried to answer.
Her mind scattered.
“At home. Then in the car. Then again at intake. I don’t know exactly. I tried to time it.”
“Fever history?”
“Three days.”
“Medication?”
Claire listed everything from her yellow pad, voice breaking only once.
Dr. Marsh listened, then disappeared behind the ICU doors.
Claire stood outside them for what felt like years.
Her hands still curved as if Noah were in them.
A nurse brought her water.
She could not drink.
A different nurse found her missing sneaker and placed it quietly beside the chair.
Claire stared at it.
That sneaker became proof she had run hard enough to lose pieces of herself.
Daniel came ten minutes later.
No Lily in his arms now.
No Vanessa clinging to his sleeve.
Just Daniel, pale and breathing hard.
“Where is he?”
Claire did not answer.
He stepped closer.
“Claire.”
She looked at him.
There were a thousand things she could have said.
Why did you carry her?
Why did you dismiss him?
Why did I have to scream louder than you cared?
But Dr. Marsh came out before any of those words could leave.
Her expression was steady.
Her eyes were not.
“The delay caused severe oxygen deprivation.”
Claire’s knees weakened.
The wall saved her from falling.
Daniel whispered, “What delay?”
Dr. Marsh turned her head toward him.
That look was controlled, but unmistakable.
She knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Enough from nurses.
Enough from timing.
Enough from the mother who arrived screaming while the father prioritized another child.
Claire closed her eyes.
The marriage did not end with a confession.

It ended with a doctor saying delay.
