Chapter 8

Claire’s sister Anna arrived with her hair still wet and her shirt buttoned wrong.

She must have left the house the second she got the call.

She ran down the corridor, saw Claire’s face, and stopped asking questions.

She just held her.

Claire broke then.

Not loudly.

Her sobs were almost silent, but her whole body shook.

Anna looked over Claire’s shoulder at Daniel.

“What happened?”

Daniel said, “It was chaotic.”

Anna’s expression sharpened.

Claire pulled back just enough to say, “He carried Lily in first.”

Anna understood immediately.

Her eyes went cold.

Daniel stepped forward.

“That is not fair.”

Anna turned on him.

“No. What’s not fair is a five-year-old behind ICU glass while you explain optics.”

Claire touched Anna’s arm.

“Please.”

Anna stopped because Claire asked, not because Daniel deserved mercy.

Dr. Marsh returned with a short update.

No final diagnosis.

No promises.

No clean answer.

Noah was alive.

The team was still treating him.

The next hours mattered.

Claire repeated the word alive in her head until it became the only prayer she could manage.

Daniel sat across the corridor, elbows on knees, hands pressed together.

Every few seconds, he looked up at the ICU doors.

Claire knew he wanted to cry.

Maybe he deserved to.

But his guilt felt like another demand.

Something else she might be expected to comfort.

She turned away.

Anna sat beside her.

No questions.

No advice.

Just presence.

That was when Claire realized how alone she had been inside her marriage.

Not because Daniel was absent from the house.

Because even when he stood near her, she was still the only one carrying Noah.
