Chapter 4

The car ride felt endless.
Phoenix traffic blurred past the windows in hard white sunlight.
Claire sat in the back seat, Noah across her lap, one hand supporting his head while the other held his feverish body close.
“Stay with me, baby,” she whispered.
Daniel drove fast, jaw clenched.
Vanessa’s voice played through the speakers.
“Lily says she can’t breathe.”
Daniel said, “I’m almost there. Meet us at the ER.”
Claire looked at the rearview mirror.
“Turn it off.”
Daniel ignored her.
“Noah needs you focused,” she snapped.
“I am focused.”
“No, you’re coordinating with Vanessa while our son is seizing in my arms.”
Daniel’s eyes flashed in the mirror.
“Don’t start.”
Noah made a small sound.
Everything in Claire stopped.
She looked down.
His eyes were partly open but unfocused.
“Daniel, faster.”
“I’m driving as fast as I can.”
When they reached the hospital, Vanessa’s car pulled in almost at the same time.
Lily stood near the curb, coughing, frightened, but upright.
Vanessa shouted, “Daniel!”
Claire was already opening the back door.
“Noah,” she gasped. “Help me.”
Daniel ran around the car.
Claire reached toward him.
But Lily cried his name.
Daniel turned.
Just turned.
That one movement explained a year of distance.
He lifted Lily first.
Claire stared.
“Daniel!”
“She can’t breathe,” he said.
“Noah can’t stay conscious!”
“I’ll get help inside.”
Then he walked ahead with Lily in his arms.
Claire lifted Noah alone.
Her knees almost gave out under his weight.
She followed them through the ambulance bay, sobbing his name into his hair.
By the time she reached the sliding doors, Daniel was already at triage.
Speaking for Lily.
