Chapter 1

Husband Returns With His New Bride to Claim His Wife’s House Before Police Expose His Forged Signature Scheme.
Daniel Reynolds returned to Elena’s inherited home with a bride in white, three black suitcases, six cardboard boxes, and the confidence of a man who believed betrayal came with moving rights.
Elena stood in front of the San Diego house with her arms folded.
Calm.
Still.
Almost smiling.
Behind Daniel, Vanessa Cole held a round bouquet of white flowers, her wedding dress catching the bright morning light. She looked confused by the police patrol car parked near the curb, but Daniel did not seem to notice it yet.
Marjorie Reynolds stood near the vehicle in pale pink, pearls resting at her throat, wearing the smug expression of a mother who thought her son had finally won.
Daniel strode toward the front door and pointed past Elena.
“Open my house, Elena!”
Elena did not move.
She looked at the man she had once called her husband and answered softly.
“It was never your house.”
Daniel blinked.
Vanessa lowered her bouquet.
“Daniel… what is she talking about?”
Daniel ignored her and shoved his old key toward the lock.
It would not enter.
The lock had been changed.
Officer Grant Miller stepped forward before Daniel could try again.
“Step away from the door and keep your hands visible.”
Daniel turned, furious.
Marjorie’s smile disappeared.
Vanessa stepped back from the boxes marked with Daniel’s name.
Officer Miller removed a sealed evidence folder and looked directly at Daniel.
“We’re investigating forged signatures and unauthorized transfers.”
Daniel’s face drained of color.
Vanessa’s bouquet dipped in her hand.
Marjorie clutched her pearls.

Elena remained in front of the locked house, steady and silent, watching Daniel realize the divorce was no longer his biggest problem.
