Chapter 5

Daniel’s old key failed in the lock.

That small metallic refusal did more damage than Elena’s words.

He shoved it once.

Then again.

The key would not enter.

His face reddened.

“You changed the locks?”

Elena answered, “Yes.”

“You had no right.”

“It is my door.”

Marjorie gasped as if ownership had insulted her personally.

Vanessa stepped backward, bouquet lowering.

“Daniel, you said everything was settled.”

“It is settled,” Daniel snapped.

Officer Miller moved closer.

“Step away from the door and keep your hands visible.”

Daniel turned slowly.

His anger shifted direction because it had run out of space at the lock.

“You don’t understand. My name is on the paperwork.”

Officer Miller’s expression remained professional.

“We have reviewed the paperwork.”

Daniel stopped.

That was the wrong answer for his story.

If the officers had not seen the papers, he could bluster.

If they had seen them and still stood beside Elena, something had gone wrong.

Elena watched his mind work.

Which signature?

Which transfer?

Which account?

Which form?

Which lie?

Marjorie whispered, “Daniel.”

He shot her a warning look.

Vanessa saw that too.

Her confusion sharpened into fear.

“What account?” she asked.

No one had mentioned an account out loud yet.

Daniel looked at her.

Too fast.

Too guilty.

Elena caught the movement and understood something else.

Vanessa did not know everything.

Maybe she knew about Elena.

Maybe she knew about the house.

Maybe she believed the divorce was complete.

But she did not know where the money came from.

Not all of it.
