Chapter 4

Vanessa was the only person in the driveway who looked truly confused.

That mattered.

Elena noticed it immediately.

Vanessa held her bouquet like a shield, not a trophy. Her eyes moved from Elena’s folded arms to Daniel’s boxes to the officers standing near the patrol car.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “why is your wife here?”

Daniel snapped, “Ex-wife.”

Elena tilted her head.

“Not legally.”

Vanessa went pale.

Marjorie stepped in quickly.

“Technicalities. Elena has always loved drama.”

Officer Miller glanced toward the second officer, who quietly activated his body camera.

Daniel pointed at the house.

“She was supposed to be out by now.”

Elena’s face remained calm.

“According to what?”

“The transfer papers.”

“The forged ones?”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Forged?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Elena is angry because I moved on.”

Elena almost smiled.

Moved on.

That was what he called arriving at her inherited home with another woman in a wedding dress and boxes labeled kitchen, study, primary bedroom.

Marjorie spoke sharply.

“The house belongs with Daniel. He maintained it.”

Elena looked at the lawn, the repaired windows, the new porch rail, the garden she had planted herself.

“He maintained nothing.”

Daniel took another step toward her.

Officer Miller’s posture changed.

“Mr. Reynolds,” he said, “keep distance.”

Daniel turned on him.

“This is a private marital matter.”

Officer Miller did not blink.

“Not anymore.”

The sentence landed quietly, but it changed the driveway.

Daniel’s confidence slipped for the first time.

Vanessa saw it.

So did Elena.
