Officer Miller removed the sealed evidence folder from under his arm.
He did not open it fully.
He did not need to.
Daniel stared at it like it was a weapon.
Marjorie’s mouth tightened.
Elena noticed her mother-in-law’s fear was not surprise.
It was recognition.
That hurt more than expected.
Marjorie had not merely supported Daniel’s entitlement.
She had known there were documents.
Maybe not all of them.
Maybe not every transfer.
But enough.
Officer Miller spoke clearly.
“We’re investigating forged signatures and unauthorized transfers.”
Vanessa’s bouquet slipped lower.
“What transfers?”
Daniel snapped, “Stay out of it.”
She flinched.
Elena recognized that tone.
The tone Daniel used when questions threatened his control.
Marjorie tried to recover.
“Officer, my son is a respected professional. Elena is emotional. She was abandoned and embarrassed, so now she is retaliating.”
Elena looked at her calmly.
“You brought his new bride to my house.”
Marjorie’s lips parted.
No answer.
Officer Miller turned slightly toward Daniel.
“Mr. Reynolds, did you submit documents claiming Mrs. Reynolds authorized transfer of this property?”
Daniel’s jaw worked.
“I had authority.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Daniel looked toward Elena.
She held his gaze without moving.
For years, he had counted on her looking away first.
Today, she did not.
The driveway went silent except for the distant sound of morning traffic and the soft rustle of Vanessa’s wedding dress in the breeze.
Daniel finally said, “My attorney handled it.”
Officer Miller’s face remained calm.
“Then your attorney will be contacted.”
That was not the rescue Daniel expected.
