Chapter 7

Vanessa stepped away from Daniel.

Only one step.

But everyone saw it.

Her bouquet trembled in her hands.

“You told me Elena signed the house over before the wedding.”

Elena’s eyes moved to her.

“Before what wedding?”

Vanessa looked stricken.

Daniel rounded on Elena.

“Don’t start.”

Elena’s expression did not change.

“You brought her here in a wedding dress.”

Marjorie hissed, “Enough.”

Officer Miller lifted one hand slightly.

“Let her speak.”

Marjorie froze.

She was not used to men in uniform refusing her tone.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Daniel said the divorce was finalized.”

Elena looked at Daniel.

He did not meet her eyes.

The second officer glanced toward Officer Miller.

No one announced a bigamy charge.

No one turned the moment into a different case.

But the lie hung there, ugly and public.

Elena felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Daniel had not simply betrayed her.

He had built overlapping worlds and promised each woman a version of the truth that served him.

To Elena, he said Vanessa meant nothing.

To Vanessa, he said Elena was already gone.

To Marjorie, he said the house would soon be his.

To the bank, apparently, he had said Elena signed.

To police, now, he had nothing clean left to say.

Vanessa looked at the boxes on the driveway.

One was marked nursery office.

Another master closet.

Another documents.

Her face changed.

“Daniel, did you use my money for this move?”

Daniel did not answer.

Elena looked at Officer Miller.

He looked back once, confirming without speaking that the unauthorized transfers were not limited to property papers.
