Chapter 8

Marjorie made one last attempt to restore the old hierarchy.
“Elena,” she said, softening her voice, “this has gone far enough. Let us go inside and discuss this as family.”
Elena turned toward her.
“Family?”
Marjorie’s eyes flicked toward the officers.
“You know what I mean.”
“I know exactly what you mean.”
For years, family had meant Elena should absorb insult quietly.
Family meant Daniel’s needs came first.
Family meant Marjorie could enter the house without knocking, rearrange furniture, criticize Elena’s work, and call the inheritance “a marital resource.”
Family meant when Daniel disappeared for nights, Elena should not embarrass him by asking where he had been.
Now family meant open the door and hide the crime.
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Marjorie’s face hardened.
“You will regret humiliating him.”
Officer Miller looked at her.
“Ma’am, do not threaten her.”
Marjorie recoiled.
“I did not threaten anyone.”
The body camera remained pointed forward.
Elena saw Marjorie notice it.
That little black lens changed her posture.
Words had consequences now.
Not family consequences.
Documented ones.
Daniel looked at the boxes again.
“Those are mine.”
Elena answered, “They can stay outside.”
“It’s my property.”
Officer Miller said, “The property ownership is part of the investigation.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
He had expected the officers to remove Elena.
Instead, they were protecting the boundary he had crossed.
The front door remained locked.
Behind Elena.
Not behind him.

That was the image he could not stand.
