Chapter 3

Elena changed the locks at sunrise.

Not dramatically.

Not angrily.

She hired a licensed locksmith, showed the deed, showed identification, and watched the old key Daniel carried become useless metal.

Then she called Officer Grant Miller.

He had already seen the preliminary complaint.

Forged signature.

Unauthorized account movement.

Possible property-transfer fraud.

Daniel thought Elena was isolated.

That was his greatest mistake.

He believed betrayal made her weak because that was how he would have felt if publicly humiliated.

But Elena became precise.

She saved messages.

Printed bank alerts.

Preserved emails.

Copied the forged transfer packet.

Sent everything to the attorney and then to the police.

When the attorney asked whether Daniel might return, Elena answered, “He has boxes packed.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he ordered moving labels to my email by mistake.”

The attorney went silent.

Then said, “Do not meet him alone.”

So Elena did not.

By the time Daniel’s SUV pulled up with Vanessa in the passenger seat and Marjorie following behind in another car, two officers were already waiting nearby.

Elena stood on the front path.

No tears.

No yelling.

No wedding-ring argument.

Daniel got out first, still glowing with the arrogance of a man who thought remarriage was a victory lap.

Vanessa stepped out carefully, smiling at first.

Then she saw Elena.

Then the house.

Then the patrol car.

Her smile faltered.

Marjorie emerged last, already waving toward the boxes.

“Put Daniel’s things in the master suite,” she said to no one in particular.

Elena looked at her.

“You won’t be unloading anything.”

Marjorie laughed.

“Dear, you are done deciding.”

That was when Daniel marched toward the door.

And Elena realized the police would not need to guess his intent.

He was about to announce it himself.
