Officer Miller finally opened the folder enough to remove a protected packet.
The pages remained turned away, no signatures visible, no readable text exposed.
But Daniel recognized something.
His own face betrayed it.
A specific line.
A stamp.
A transfer reference.
Something he had believed would stay buried inside offices and online forms.
His breathing changed.
Elena watched him with the detached sadness of someone seeing the full shape of a man she once loved.
Officer Miller spoke again.
“We have reason to believe forged authorization was used in connection with this property and related financial accounts.”
Vanessa whispered, “Related accounts?”
Daniel shut his eyes.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Vanessa stepped farther away.
Marjorie grabbed Daniel’s arm.
Not to comfort him.
To steady herself.
Elena thought of the alerts she had received.
The small withdrawals at first.
Then larger attempted transfers.
Then one blocked transaction linked to an account Daniel claimed he had closed years ago.
Her attorney called it a pattern.
The police called it unauthorized transfers.
Daniel called it nothing.
Because silence was the only defense left.
Officer Miller looked directly at him.
“You are not to enter the residence.”
Daniel stared at Elena.
“You planned this.”
Elena shook her head.
“No. You brought the boxes.”
That sentence stung him more than anger would have.
