Chapter 10

No arrests happened in the hospital corridor.

No final test result was announced.

No substance inside the cake was named.

Daniel’s complete plan remained hidden.

No legal outcome unfolded beneath the fluorescent lights.

Vivian and Marissa remained conscious but weak on parallel gurneys while medical staff continued monitoring them.

The black cake box was sealed.

The remaining cake was preserved.

The blinking device sat inside an evidence pouch beside Claire’s photographs.

Detective Lena Ortiz compared the sealed device with the images on Claire’s phone, then looked at the luxury cake box as if it had stopped being a gift and become a map.

Claire stood between the gurneys, still holding her phone.

Daniel’s name appeared again on the unreadable screen.

The ringing cut through the hospital noise.

She did not answer.

Ortiz turned to the investigator beside her.

“Seal the box.”

Then she looked directly at Claire.

“Claire may have been the target.”

The words landed quietly.

That made them worse.

Vivian closed her eyes.

Marissa began to cry again.

Claire looked from the sealed cake box to the evidence pouch, then down at the phone ringing in her hand.

Daniel had told her to eat first.

Not his mother.

Not his sister.

Claire.

Her anniversary gift had not been a reconciliation.

It had been an instruction.

Her expression changed from shock to cold realization.

The phone continued ringing.

Detective Ortiz waited.

The box was sealed.

The device was preserved.

The motive remained hidden.

And Claire Bennett finally understood that the cake Daniel sent was not meant to celebrate fifteen years of marriage.

It was meant to end the woman who had survived them.
