Daniel had always loved expensive apologies.
Flowers after insults.
Jewelry after disappearances.
Dinners after threats disguised as concern.
The more serious the damage, the more elegant the gift.
So when the $12,000 anniversary cake arrived in a black box with silver ribbon, Claire did not feel loved.
She felt studied.
The delivery came with no card from Daniel.
Only a printed bakery label and one scheduled voice message waiting on her phone.
Vivian noticed the box first.
“Finally,” she said, entering Claire’s dining room as if it belonged to her. “My son remembered he married someone.”
Marissa followed with champagne, already amused.
Claire had not invited them.
Daniel had.
He claimed he was delayed at work but wanted his mother and sister there “so Claire wouldn’t be alone on such an important night.”
Such an important night.
Their fifteenth anniversary.
The night Daniel should have been sitting across from her.
Instead, his voice came through a phone.
Cold.
Precise.
“Eat it first, Claire. Don’t wait for anyone.”
Vivian rolled her eyes.
“He probably knows you’ll spend twenty minutes analyzing frosting.”
Marissa laughed.
“You do make everything suspicious.”
Claire looked at the cake.
She had spent the last year learning that suspicion was not weakness.
It was memory.
Daniel had become careful lately.
Too careful.
He stopped leaving papers on his desk.
Changed passwords.
Switched doctors after Claire questioned a prescription bottle that was not hers.
Installed new smart-home devices without explanation.
And then, three weeks before their anniversary, he asked whether she had updated her will.
“Just responsible planning,” he said.
Now, beneath the cake board, something blinked red.
Claire did not gasp.
She did not accuse.
She photographed it.
