Chapter 9

Detective Ortiz ordered the cake box sealed again.
Not casually.
With the precision of someone who had begun to see the scene differently.
At first, the emergency looked like accidental exposure.
Two women ate a suspicious cake.
A hidden device was found.
A husband sent the cake.
Then Daniel’s instruction changed the center of the story.
Eat it first, Claire.
Don’t wait for anyone.
Then Claire’s photographs preserved the device before it was moved.
Then Marissa mentioned signing.
Then Vivian reacted to estate documents.
Piece by piece, the target shifted.
Not Vivian.
Not Marissa.
Claire.
Ortiz turned toward the emergency staff.
“Keep the cake box separated from personal belongings.”
Then to another investigator.
“Document the device, the photographs, and the audio message together.”
Claire listened in silence.
Her phone rang again.
Daniel.
Still she did not answer.
Vivian whispered, “Claire, he needs to know what happened.”
Claire looked at her.
“He knows what he sent.”
Vivian said nothing.
Marissa turned her face away.
Detective Ortiz stepped closer to Claire.
“Mrs. Bennett, I need to say this carefully. We are not stating motive. We are not naming the substance. We are not concluding the plan.”
Claire nodded once.
“But?”
Ortiz looked toward the sealed box.
“But the instruction to eat first, the concealed device, and the surrounding circumstances suggest you may not have been an incidental victim.”
Claire’s hand tightened around her phone.
For the first time, fear arrived late.
Not panic.
A cold internal drop.
Because she had suspected Daniel was cruel.

She had not fully accepted he might be patient.
