Chapter 7

Daniel called for the first time while Claire was speaking with Detective Ortiz.
The phone vibrated in her hand.
His name filled the unreadable screen.
Claire did not answer.
Ortiz looked at it.
“Is that him?”
“Yes.”
“Let it ring.”
Claire did.
The phone stopped.
Then started again.
Daniel was not used to being unanswered.
That small fact suddenly mattered.
Claire remembered every time he called until she picked up.
Every time he said, “I just want to hear your voice,” after an argument he started.
Every time he checked whether she had eaten, slept, taken medication, signed a form, opened a package.
Care disguised as surveillance.
Love disguised as management.
The phone rang a third time.
Vivian turned her head toward the sound.
Marissa began crying harder.
Ortiz said, “Do not speak with him without counsel present.”
Claire nodded.
The phone stopped again.
A message arrived, but she did not open it.
No readable screen.
No curiosity.
No giving Daniel the satisfaction of becoming the next voice in her head.
A hospital technician brought over the sealed pouch containing the black device.
Ortiz compared it with Claire’s photos.
“The serial plate is partially intact,” she said.
Claire looked at it.
“I photographed it before anyone moved it.”
“Good.”
“Can it identify where it came from?”
“Eventually, maybe.”
“Is it what caused this?”
Ortiz did not answer.
And Claire understood.
The substance inside the cake, the device’s purpose, Daniel’s complete plan—none of that would be explained in a hallway.
Not yet.
But the direction was already clear enough to chill her.
Someone wanted Claire to eat first.
Someone expected her to be alone with the cake.
May you like
Someone did not expect Vivian and Marissa to laugh themselves into becoming evidence.
