Chapter 4

Emergency calls expose character.
Claire learned that in less than sixty seconds.
Marissa panicked first.
Vivian tried to deny anything was wrong even while her hand gripped the table hard enough to shake the silverware.
Claire became calm.
The calm frightened her later, but in the moment it saved them.
She gave the dispatcher the address.
Ate portion of cake.
Two adult women disoriented.
Possible contamination unknown.
Hidden device beneath cake board.
No, she did not know what it was.
No, she would not disturb it further.
Yes, she had photographs.
Vivian tried to stand and nearly fell.
Claire caught her by the elbow, lowering her into a chair without softness but without cruelty.
Marissa whispered, “Call Daniel.”
Claire looked at the phone.
Daniel was not the person to call.
Not first.
Not now.
Paramedics arrived quickly because the private hospital was less than ten minutes away and the Bennett address carried money’s invisible priority.
Claire hated that even as she used it.
She directed them to Vivian and Marissa.
Pointed out the cake.
Showed the device without touching it again.
One paramedic asked, “Did you eat any?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Claire looked at the black box.
“Because my husband told me to eat first.”
The paramedic’s face changed.
A second responder carefully preserved the remaining cake portion while another bagged the device after Claire’s photographs were secured.
Vivian reached weakly for Claire’s sleeve.
“Don’t make this a scandal.”
Claire looked down at her.
“My husband sent me a cake with a hidden device under it, and you ate it to mock me.”
Vivian’s eyes filled with fear.
Claire’s voice stayed level.
May you like
“The scandal already arrived.”
