Chapter 8

Marissa finally spoke.
Not to Claire.
To the detective.
“Daniel said she was impossible,” she whispered.
Ortiz moved closer.
“Who is she?”
Marissa’s eyes shifted toward Claire.
Claire did not react.
“He said Claire ruined everything. That she wouldn’t sign. That she was paranoid.”
Claire’s pulse slowed.
Sign.
There it was again.
“What did he want me to sign?” Claire asked.
Marissa closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
Vivian said weakly, “Stop talking.”
Marissa opened her eyes.
Fear made her honest, but not brave.
“I heard him and Mom arguing. He said after the anniversary, everything would be easier.”
Claire looked at Vivian.
The older woman’s face had gone gray beneath the hospital lights.
Detective Ortiz spoke calmly.
“Mrs. Bennett, do not answer for her.”
Vivian fell silent.
Claire felt the hallway narrowing around one truth.
Daniel had expected the anniversary to change something.
A signature.
A status.
A legal position.
An inheritance clause.
A medical event.
She refused to guess out loud.
Guessing helped Daniel.
Facts would hurt him.
Ortiz looked at Claire.
“Did you have any pending financial documents with your husband?”
“Yes.”
“What kind?”
“Estate revisions. Insurance updates. Corporate beneficiary forms.”
Vivian made a small sound.
Claire turned.
“You knew.”
Vivian’s eyes filled.
Not with remorse.
With fear.
Claire understood then that Vivian’s insistence on keeping the matter quiet was not simply maternal loyalty.
