Chapter 3

Vivian Bennett believed Claire had ruined Daniel’s life by refusing to disappear quietly.

That was her favorite accusation.

“You made marriage difficult,” she said.

“You questioned him too much.”

“You never understood the pressure men like Daniel carry.”

Men like Daniel.

Claire used to wonder what that meant.

Rich?

Respected?

Charming in rooms where waiters refilled glasses before anyone asked?

Or simply protected by women like Vivian, who translated cruelty into stress and control into leadership?

Marissa had a simpler role.

She laughed.

At Claire’s clothes.

Claire’s caution.

Claire’s refusal to drink when Daniel poured.

Claire’s habit of checking labels before taking anything from a bottle.

Tonight, Marissa lifted the champagne glass and watched Claire stare at the cake.

“Honestly, Claire, it’s dessert. Not a legal contract.”

Vivian smiled.

“If she won’t eat it, we will.”

Claire’s eyes remained on the blinking device.

She saw the indicator speed change after Vivian cut into the cake.

Subtle.

Faster.

Her mind went still.

The way it did in emergencies.

Not panic.

Sequence.

Photograph.

Distance.

Do not touch unnecessary surfaces.

Preserve the box.

Protect the remaining portion.

Call help.

Vivian took the first bite with theatrical confidence.

Marissa took hers immediately after, as if proving loyalty to Daniel required mocking Claire’s fear.

Claire watched both women.

Not triumphantly.

With dread.

Because if the cake was dangerous, they had just stepped into something meant for her.

“Relax,” Marissa said, raising her glass. “It’s only anniversary cake.”

Then her fingers trembled.

The glass slipped.

Crystal shattered.

Vivian’s smile died.

Claire stood so fast her chair struck the floor behind her.

“Do not take another bite.”

For once, neither woman laughed.
