Chapter 5

The transition from dining room to hospital felt unreal.

Warm chandelier light became cool clinical brightness.

Champagne became oxygen masks.

Silk and pearls became hospital blankets.

Vivian and Marissa lay on parallel gurneys, conscious but weak, while medical staff moved around them with quiet urgency.

No graphic illness.

No dramatic collapse.

Just enough weakness to make every laugh from dinner feel obscene.

Claire stood between the gurneys holding her phone.

Her blouse was still neat.

Her face was calm.

But inside, something was breaking open.

She kept replaying Daniel’s message.

Eat it first, Claire.

Don’t wait for anyone.

Not share it.

Not enjoy it.

Not happy anniversary.

Eat it first.

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived with the kind of expression Claire recognized from people who had already heard enough to become careful.

She wore a dark professional coat and spoke softly, but every question landed with weight.

“Mrs. Bennett, who sent the cake?”

“My husband.”

“Was he present?”

“No.”

“Did he instruct you to eat first?”

Claire unlocked her phone and played the audio once.

Daniel’s voice filled the hospital corridor.

“Eat it first, Claire. Don’t wait for anyone.”

Marissa turned her head weakly on the gurney.

Vivian closed her eyes.

Detective Ortiz did not react visibly.

“Did you notice anything unusual before anyone ate?”

Claire showed the photographs.

The bakery seal.

The underside of the cake board.

The blinking black device.

Ortiz studied the images, then looked toward the sealed evidence pouch.

Claire spoke before the detective could.

“That device was never meant for a bakery.”

Ortiz’s eyes sharpened.

“No,” she said quietly. “It was not.”
