Chapter 10 - THE SCHOOL PICKUP FORM
Lily remained in the hospital, so Nolan could not collect her from school.
The form served another purpose.
It named a woman called Clara Wynn as Richard’s authorized emergency contact.
Clara had worked as Lily’s nanny during Amelia’s final year.
She disappeared shortly after Victoria entered the family.
Richard had been told Clara stole jewelry and fled before police could question her.
The theft report came from Nolan.
Detective Laura located Clara in Vermont.
She answered the phone and began crying when she heard Lily’s name.
“I tried to come back.”
“Why didn’t you?” Richard asked.
“Nolan said Victoria would have me arrested. He showed me video of jewelry inside my bag.”
“Did you steal it?”
“No.”
The mansion’s recovered footage showed Victoria placing the jewelry there.
Another staged accusation.
Clara had witnessed Amelia confronting Nolan about the trust.
She also saw Victoria in the study weeks before Amelia’s death.
“Amelia told her never to come near Lily,” Clara said.
“What did Victoria say?”
“That children always choose the adult who controls the room.”
Clara preserved photographs from her final days at the mansion.
One showed Lily asleep beside Snowy.
Another showed Nolan removing files from Amelia’s archive cabinet after the funeral.
A third showed Victoria entering through the servant passage months before Richard officially met her.
Clara had evidence.
Nolan needed her discredited and gone.
Why name her on the forged school form now?
Because Nolan intended to shift suspicion.
If police found the form, Clara would appear connected to his attempted removal of Lily.
He was still building alternate stories while hiding.
Clara agreed to return and testify.
She also revealed where Amelia kept backup documents.
Inside the chandelier’s maintenance housing.
Amelia distrusted the study after discovering Nolan had duplicate keys. She asked Clara to hide a small memory card above the center fixture.
The chandelier had remained in place for years.
At the mansion, technicians lowered it carefully.
A black memory card was taped beneath the brass crown.
It contained footage from a tiny camera aimed toward the sitting room.
The angle showed the entire area beneath the red curtains.
Victoria had not known it existed.
The recordings documented months of abuse.
Lily forced to stand.
Lily made to kneel on the patterned rug.
Victoria removing food when the child cried.
Nolan entering to review reports.
Richard watched only enough to confirm identities.
He could not endure the rest.
The final clip came from the night before his return.
Victoria placed broken glass beside the curtain.
Nolan handed her the forged behavioral packet.
“She must collapse where the room camera can see,” he said.
“What if Richard comes home early?”
“He will believe the documents before the child.”
Victoria smiled.
“He always does.”
Richard closed his eyes.
That was the belief their plan depended on.
Not that he hated Lily.
That he trusted polished adults more than frightened children.
The recording continued.
Lily entered holding Snowy.
She heard them.
Victoria saw her reflection in the window and turned.
The clip ended after Victoria crossed the room.
The next morning, Lily had bruises on her legs.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Laura distributed Nolan’s image nationwide.
Grace prepared a civil action to recover every dollar diverted from the trust.
Whitmore Biotech’s board removed Red Vale authority and reinstated Lily’s protected shares.
The family’s financial future was secure.
Lily’s sense of safety was not.
She asked Richard whether the chandelier would still be in the house when she returned.
“No,” he said.
“Can the curtains go too?”
“Yes.”
“And the rug?”
“All of it.”
She looked at him carefully.
“What if I want to live somewhere else?”
Richard understood the mansion belonged to him legally.
Home belonged to both of them emotionally.
“Then we live somewhere else.”
Lily nodded.
That evening, Clara arrived at the hospital.
Lily recognized her immediately and reached out.
For the first time since Richard’s return, she allowed another adult to hug her without fear.
Clara whispered something into Richard’s ear.
“Amelia left one final instruction. She said only Lily would know when to use it.”
“What instruction?”
Clara pointed toward Snowy’s repaired collar.
Inside the fabric was a small emergency button.
Lily pressed it.
The bear connected to an encrypted account and downloaded one final file.
Nolan’s voice began speaking.
