Chapter 3 - THE WHITE TEDDY BEAR

Lily was admitted overnight.

Richard refused to let Victoria remain in the room. Nolan protested until hospital security reminded him that Richard was the child’s legal parent.

Victoria left only after whispering to Richard near the elevator.

“You are making a terrible mistake.”

“No,” he said. “I made the mistake when I trusted you.”

At midnight, Lily woke from a nightmare.

She grabbed Richard’s sleeve and begged him not to turn off the light.

“No dark rooms,” she whispered.

He switched on the lamp beside the bed.

“No dark rooms.”

She studied his face as though measuring whether he meant it.

The white teddy bear lay between them. Richard had bought it at the airport after seeing it in a shop window. Lily’s old bear, Snowy, had disappeared months earlier.

“This one looks like Snowy,” Richard said.

Lily shook her head.

“Snowy knew things.”

“What things?”

“Mommy’s voice.”

Richard thought she meant childhood memories.

Then Lily turned the new bear over and touched the seam along its back.

“Snowy had a zipper.”

Amelia had ordered the original bear from a custom toy maker. Richard remembered a small audio device inside it that played a bedtime message in Amelia’s voice.

After Amelia died, Lily slept with it every night.

“Where is Snowy now?”

“Victoria took him.”

“Why?”

“She said Mommy made me disobedient.”

Richard’s hands tightened.

“When?”

“After I heard the secret.”

“What secret?”

Lily stared toward the hospital door.

“Nolan said I had to be sick before my birthday.”

Richard felt cold spread across his chest.

Lily’s ninth birthday was six weeks away.

Nolan had managed the Hawthorne family trusts since before Richard inherited the company. He knew every condition attached to Lily’s maternal inheritance.

Richard called Grace Holloway, an independent attorney who once represented Amelia.

She answered on the third ring.

“Richard?”

“I need to know what happens to Amelia’s trust when Lily turns nine.”

Grace became quiet.

“You should already know.”

“I don’t.”

“Amelia instructed Nolan to provide you with the final terms after her death.”

“He never did.”

Grace asked whether he was alone.

Richard looked toward Lily.

“My daughter is in the hospital with injuries caused inside my house.”

Grace’s voice changed immediately.

“At nine, Lily receives legal recognition as the protected beneficiary of Amelia’s voting shares in Whitmore Biotech.”

“How many shares?”

“Thirty-eight percent.”

Richard stood.

Amelia’s family company was worth hundreds of millions.

“Who controls them now?”

“A temporary trust administered by Nolan.”

“And after Lily turns nine?”

“You become co-trustee until she is eighteen, but major decisions require an independent child advocate.”

“Where does Victoria fit?”

“She does not.”

Richard remembered the medical folder, behavioral reports, and added signature pages.

“What if Lily is declared medically or psychologically incapable?”

Grace answered slowly.

“The court may appoint a permanent guardian to exercise her beneficiary rights.”

Richard looked toward the sleeping child.

Victoria had entered their lives through the foundation.

Nolan controlled Amelia’s trust.

Together, they had been documenting Lily as unstable.

Grace continued.

“Richard, Amelia called me two weeks before she died. She said Nolan was pressuring her to revise the guardianship clause.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“She said she would handle it. After her death, Nolan claimed the issue had been resolved.”

“It wasn’t.”

“No.”

Lily moved beneath the blanket.

The teddy bear slipped to the floor.

When Richard picked it up, he felt something hard beneath the fabric.

He opened the new bear’s stitched seam with his fingers.

Inside was a small digital recorder.

He had purchased the toy unopened at an airport store that afternoon.

He had never placed the recorder there.

A single audio file waited on the device.

Richard pressed play.

Amelia’s voice filled the hospital room.

“Richard, if Lily ever says the red curtains are hiding something, believe her.”

The recording ended.

Richard stared at the bear.

The device could not have been placed there by Amelia.

Someone had known exactly which toy he would buy before he entered the mansion.

👉 Amelia’s voice pointed Richard back toward the red curtains, but the hidden recorder proved someone had been guiding him from the moment he came home.
