Chapter 8 - THE PASSAGE BENEATH THE TERRACE
Police entered the servant passage from both ends.
The tunnel had been built when the mansion was constructed a century earlier. It connected the east terrace to the laundry rooms and an old wine cellar.
Nolan knew the route because his firm handled the property restoration after Richard inherited the estate.
The corridor camera captured him entering with the silver key around his neck.
He carried a black case.
Officers reached Amelia’s study six minutes later.
The archive cabinet stood open.
The hidden rear panel had been unlocked.
Nolan was gone.
A window leading onto the garden roof remained open.
Inside the compartment, only dust and an empty velvet sleeve remained.
Whatever Amelia had hidden there was missing.
The garden camera showed Nolan crossing the roof and dropping onto a maintenance balcony. A waiting car collected him outside the west gate.
The driver’s face was obscured.
Victoria remained in custody.
Someone else had helped him escape.
Richard wanted to pursue the car himself.
Laura stopped him.
“Your daughter needs you at the hospital.”
“He took Amelia’s evidence.”
“And if you chase him recklessly, Victoria’s reports about your instability become useful.”
Richard forced himself to remain still.
Nolan’s strongest weapon was still reaction.
At the hospital, Lily asked whether Snowy had been found.
Richard brought the bear into her room.
She cried when she saw the torn collar.
“He hurt him.”
“We can repair it.”
“Mommy’s key is gone.”
“Yes.”
Lily examined the bear more carefully.
Then she pushed one finger into the empty collar seam.
A tiny strip of metal slid out.
The tag Nolan removed had been a decoy.
Amelia had sewn a second key inside the collar.
Richard stared at it.
If Nolan used the key he stole to open the compartment, why did this one still exist?
The answer came from the velvet sleeve inside the cabinet.
Two objects had been stored there.
Nolan had taken only the one he could see.
The second remained behind a false interior wall.
Richard returned with Laura and used Lily’s hidden key.
A lower panel opened.
Inside were a hard drive and a sealed letter addressed to Richard.
The letter was written by Amelia.
Richard,
If Nolan reaches this compartment, he will take the visible ledger and believe he has won. The real evidence is beneath it.
The hard drive contained financial records proving Nolan diverted trust money through Red Vale Management for years.
But Amelia’s message continued.
Victoria Lane is not his partner by accident. Nolan selected her after reviewing Richard’s personal vulnerabilities. If I am gone, she will approach him through the foundation.
Amelia had predicted the relationship.
Richard struggled to breathe.
Another file documented Victoria’s background. She had changed surnames twice and worked for three wealthy families involved in guardianship disputes.
In each case, Nolan’s firm represented the estate.
The pattern was clear but contained.
Nolan identified vulnerable families.
Victoria entered as caregiver or adviser.
Together, they created dependency and moved assets.
Lily was their largest target.
The hard drive also contained Amelia’s final legal amendment.
It removed Nolan as trustee immediately upon her death and named Grace Holloway as successor.
The amendment was notarized.
It should have transferred control two years earlier.
Nolan had hidden it from the court and continued administering the trust illegally.
Grace filed it that evening.
The judge removed Nolan permanently and placed the shares under independent protection.
Victoria lost every possible claim.
Nolan’s financial network was frozen.
For the first time, their plan truly began collapsing.
Then Laura received a call from the highway patrol.
Nolan’s abandoned escape car had been found burning near the state line.
No body was inside.
The visible ledger from Amelia’s compartment lay on the passenger seat.
Its final page contained a handwritten note:

Richard is not Lily’s only legal parent.
