Chapter 14 - BENEATH THE PATTERNED RUG

Police returned to the mansion.
The sitting room remained sealed.
The chandelier hung low from its maintenance cables. The red curtains were gone. Without them, the room looked exposed.
Technicians rolled back the large patterned rug.
Beneath it was polished wood.
One board carried a tiny brass mark matching Whitmore Biotech’s crest.
The hidden key from Snowy opened it.
A square section of flooring lifted.
Below was a shallow vault.
Amelia had hidden corporate research records there.
Not money.
Not jewelry.
Files.
Whitmore Biotech had developed a medical patent worth billions. Amelia discovered Nolan was negotiating private licensing rights through Hawthorne Holdings without proper board approval.
That was why she removed him as trustee.
That was why Nolan needed Lily’s shares controlled.
The patent records could expose years of self-dealing.
Richard’s board benefited indirectly, but the original transaction belonged to Nolan.
Inside the vault were signed research assignments and a video statement from Amelia.
“Nolan believes control of Lily gives him control of Whitmore,” she said. “He is wrong. The patent belongs to a separate scientific trust. Lily receives authority only after the hidden records are delivered to an independent court.”
Richard called Grace.
The records would trigger a new corporate investigation and recover enormous value for researchers whose work Nolan had exploited.
Nolan had not entered the mansion merely to steal Lily’s inheritance.
He wanted the patent evidence destroyed.
The vault appeared untouched.
He never found it.
Amelia’s decoy compartments had kept him searching in the wrong places.
One file contained Victoria’s original consulting contract.
Nolan hired her to observe Amelia’s routines and report which documents she copied.
Victoria claimed she believed the work involved corporate security.
Later messages showed she understood the truth.
When Amelia removed her, Victoria demanded payment.
Nolan promised her a future position near Richard.
The plan that destroyed Lily’s safety began as a corporate surveillance arrangement.
It became personal because Victoria wanted the life Amelia had.
Police issued additional charges.
The Whitmore board joined the case against Nolan.
Federal investigators froze Red Vale accounts.
Every escape route narrowed.
Richard brought Lily to the mansion only after she asked to see the room.
The glass was gone.
The curtains were gone.
The chandelier had been removed.
Sunlight filled the windows.
Lily stood where she had collapsed.
Her legs trembled, but she remained upright.
Richard did not reach for her until she lifted one hand.
He held it lightly.
“Do you want to keep the house?” he asked.
Lily looked around.
“Can we change this room?”
“Anything you want.”
“No red.”
“No red.”
“No secret cameras except safety ones.”
“Agreed.”
“And no one gets to make me stand.”
“Never.”
They decided to turn the sitting room into a library and children’s art space.
The mansion would no longer be a symbol of Victoria’s authority.
Lily would decide what it became.
As they left, the disconnected hallway camera suddenly rotated.
Its power cable was not attached.
A red indicator light blinked once.
Richard moved Lily behind him.
The old security monitor activated.
A live image appeared from beneath the mansion.
Nolan stood inside the servant passage.
He held a lighter beside a stack of copied patent files.
Police were still searching the property.
No one knew he had entered.
Nolan looked directly into the hidden camera.
“You found the vault,” he said.
Then he turned toward someone outside the frame.
May you like
“Bring me the girl’s bear.”
👉 Nolan had returned to the mansion, and he was not alone.
