Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE STUDY

Victoria reached the study before officers intercepted her.
She held no weapon.
She carried a legal folder.
“I live here,” she said. “You cannot search private rooms without notifying me.”
Detective Laura stepped between her and the archive cabinet.
“This property belongs to Richard Hawthorne.”
“I am his fiancée.”
“You are also under investigation for suspected child abuse.”
Victoria looked toward Richard.
“You brought police into our home based on the fantasies of an injured child.”
Richard turned the tablet screen toward her.
Amelia’s image remained frozen there.
Victoria’s face lost color.
“Where did you get that?”
“My wife left it.”
“She was medicated when she made those recordings.”
“You told me you never met her.”
“I never met her socially.”
“That is not what you said.”
Victoria recovered quickly.
She opened the folder.
“I came to give you this.”
The document requested emergency protection for Lily. It claimed Richard’s sudden anger and grief made him dangerous. Nolan had signed as trust counsel.
Victoria wanted the court to place Lily in a private treatment center until a guardian hearing could occur.
Richard read the facility name.
Redwood House.
The same company had received consulting payments from Nolan’s firm.
“How long has this been prepared?”
“It was drafted after tonight.”
The electronic creation date showed otherwise.
Three months earlier.
Victoria had planned Lily’s removal long before Richard found her beside the curtain.
Laura confiscated the folder.
“Why was Lily standing for hours beneath the chandelier?”
Victoria looked offended.
“She was never forced to stand for hours.”
“Then how did her muscles become inflamed?”
“She refuses to exercise.”
“Why did she say you punished her until the chandelier moved?”
“Because children measure time strangely.”
Richard moved closer.
“Did you take Snowy?”
Victoria’s confidence wavered.
“The old bear was filthy.”
“Where is it?”
“I threw it away.”
Lily’s drawings suggested otherwise.
Laura ordered a search of Victoria’s bedroom.
Inside a locked wardrobe, officers found Lily’s shoes, several broken toys, and a box labeled CORRECTION ITEMS.
The box contained a wooden ruler, lengths of ribbon used as restraints, and printed punishment schedules.
Each schedule tracked how long Lily stood, knelt, or remained silent.
Victoria’s initials appeared beside completed sessions.
The longest punishment lasted three hours and twenty minutes.
Richard looked away before rage overwhelmed him.
Laura continued searching.
Beneath the wardrobe floor lay a small safe.
The brass key did not open it.
Victoria refused to provide the combination.
A locksmith arrived.
Inside were sedatives prescribed under another name, copies of Lily’s trust documents, and photographs of bruises taken before they healed.
Victoria had documented the injuries herself.
Not to report them.
To monitor where they appeared.
A note warned:
Avoid visible areas before school events.
The same instruction had shaped every mark on Lily’s body.
Victoria’s mask finally broke.
“She needed control!”
Richard stepped toward her.
Laura raised one hand.
“Do not touch her.”
Victoria pointed at the archive tablet.
“Amelia created a child who believed grief excused everything. Lily manipulated every adult around her.”
“She is eight,” Richard said.
“She owns more voting power than people who spent their lives building companies.”
There it was.
Not concern.
Not discipline.
Ownership.
Laura placed Victoria under arrest for child endangerment, unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, and suspected assault.
As officers led her away, she looked at Richard.
“You think Nolan will let you take the trust from him?”
Richard met her eyes.
“He will not have a choice.”
Victoria laughed softly.
“He already moved the shares.”
The room went silent.
Richard called Grace immediately.
She checked the corporate registry.
Hours earlier, Nolan had submitted a confidential trustee action transferring temporary voting authority from Lily’s trust to an emergency holding company.
The authorization carried Richard’s signature.

Another forgery.
👉 Victoria had been arrested, but Nolan had already used forged authority to move Lily’s inheritance beyond Richard’s reach.
