Chapter 7 - SNOWY’S LAST RECORDINGS
The recovered footage began with ordinary memories.
Lily sleeping beside Amelia.
Amelia reading beneath the chandelier.
Richard carrying his daughter through the sitting room after a birthday party.
Then the dates moved forward.
Amelia disappeared from the clips.
Victoria entered.
At first, she smiled whenever Lily approached.
Later, when she believed no one was watching, her face changed.
One recording showed Victoria gripping Lily’s wrist because the child refused to call her “Mom.”
Another showed her forcing Lily to stand beneath the chandelier while guests dined in the next room.
Nolan entered midway through the punishment.
He did not stop it.
He handed Victoria a behavioral report and said:
“Make the incident visible without leaving permanent damage.”
Richard paused the footage.
Detective Laura watched beside him.
“That places Nolan directly inside the abuse.”
The next clip was worse.
Victoria placed broken glass on the carpet after Lily accidentally knocked over an empty vase. She removed the child’s shoes and ordered her to clean the pieces by hand.
Lily cut one finger.
Victoria photographed the blood and later described the injury as self-harm.
Nolan reviewed the image.
“Useful,” he said.
The final recording before Snowy disappeared showed Lily hiding behind the red curtain.
Victoria and Nolan stood near the fireplace.
“The birthday deadline is too close,” Victoria said.
“Then we need a medical event,” Nolan replied.
“What kind?”
“Something that makes Richard believe the child requires full-time supervision.”
“And if he comes home early?”
“He never does.”
Lily moved behind the curtain.
The camera shifted.
A small sound came from the bear.
Nolan turned.
The clip ended.
The cloud account contained no later footage from the mansion.
The newest file had been recorded inside Nolan’s office after Victoria’s arrest.
Nolan placed Snowy on a table during a video call.
Victoria’s voice came through his laptop.
“You said the transfer was protected.”
“The judge froze it.”
“Then use the second authorization.”
“Richard has Grace Holloway now.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You should have removed her years ago.”
Nolan leaned closer.
“The child has the archive tablet.”
“How?”
“Richard found the curtain key.”
Victoria’s face changed.
“What files were on it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then you need to get into the mansion before he opens the final partition.”
Richard stopped the video.
“What final partition?”
Laura searched Amelia’s archive cabinet again.
The back panel sounded hollow.
Behind it was a narrow compartment requiring a second key.
The brass curtain key opened only the front door.
No second key had been found.
Lily remembered Snowy’s collar.
“There was a little silver tag.”
Richard looked at the photograph of the bear inside Nolan’s office.
The collar still carried the tag.
The key was with Nolan.
Police obtained an arrest warrant.
When officers reached his office, it was empty.
Snowy remained on the table.
The collar had been cut away.
Nolan’s car was missing.
His phone had been left inside a desk drawer.
The office safe contained cash, passports, and an emergency access card to the Hawthorne mansion.
Richard’s private security company had never issued it.
The card had been cloned.
Laura notified the estate guards.
No one had entered.
Then a perimeter camera showed Nolan’s car abandoned near the wooded edge of the property.
Fresh footprints led toward an old servant entrance beneath the east terrace.
