part 2

PART 2
Before that night, Elena had tried to believe Maya was only unhappy.
Not unsafe.
That was the lie mothers tell themselves when the truth is too ugly to hold.
Maya had always been bright.
Loud when she laughed.
Careless with lipstick.
Always late to family dinners because she stopped to help someone or buy flowers she did not need.
After she married David, she became quiet.
Not peaceful.
Quiet.
There is a difference.
Her clothes changed first.
Long sleeves in summer.
Muted colors.
No more red lipstick because David said it made her look desperate.
Then her phone habits changed.
She answered texts with short sentences.
She stopped calling from the car.
She said David preferred “privacy.”
Elena noticed everything.
She asked questions carefully.
Maya answered carefully too.
“I’m fine, Mom.”
“He’s under stress.”
“Rebecca is traditional.”
“You’re reading too much into it.”
Elena wanted to drive to Maya’s house and bring her home.
But every article, every counselor, every survivor she had ever listened to said the same thing.
Push too hard and the abuser uses you as proof.
So Elena stayed close.
She sent groceries.
She invited Maya to lunch.
She memorized every bruise Maya called clumsy.
David was charming when watched.
He kissed Maya’s temple at charity dinners.
He called Elena “Mom” in public.
He spoke softly to waiters and tipped enough to look generous.
Rebecca was worse.
She did not hide her beliefs.
She wrapped them in pearls.
“A wife should not embarrass her husband.”
“A family name must be respected.”
“A man who provides deserves obedience.”
The Copper Lantern dinner was supposed to celebrate David’s promotion.
Elena did not want to go.
Maya begged her.
“Please, Mom.”
“If you’re there, he behaves better.”
That sentence had stayed inside Elena’s chest all evening.
Then Maya accidentally contradicted David about a business story.
A tiny correction.
A date.
Nothing more.
David smiled at first.
Then his hand went to the back of her chair.
Then her hair.
May you like
Then the room shattered.
