part 9

PART 9
Returning to the house was harder than court.
Maya thought the legal words would be the worst part.
Protective order.
Assault.
Coercive control.
Evidence.
But none of those words hurt like standing in the bedroom where she had learned to move quietly.
Elena went with her.
So did two officers.
Maya packed slowly.
Clothes first.
Then documents.
Then the framed photograph of her father, who had died before meeting David and therefore never had to learn what kind of man his daughter married.
She left the wedding album.
She left the crystal bowls Rebecca gave them.
She left the cream dress David once said made her look respectable.
In the bathroom drawer, she found the red lipstick David had thrown away.
He had not thrown it away.
He had hidden it behind razors and unopened cologne.
That made her angrier than if he had destroyed it.
He had wanted proof that even small pieces of herself could be held hostage.
Maya put the lipstick in her purse.
At the bottom of the closet, Elena found a small black notebook.
Maya stared when she saw it.
“That’s mine.”
Inside were dates.
Not complete sentences.
Just little marks Maya had made during the months when she was too afraid to write the full truth.
Wrist.
Kitchen.
Door locked.
Rebecca saw.
Hair.
Restaurant if Mom comes.
Elena covered her mouth.
Maya touched the last line.
“I knew he might do something.”
“But I thought if you were there, he’d stop.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“He didn’t stop.”
“No.”
Maya looked around the room.
“But you did not freeze.”
That sentence stayed with Elena.
Because she had wondered every night since the restaurant whether she should have moved faster.
Called sooner.
Pulled David’s hand away instead of dialing.
Now she understood.
She had done the one thing David could not control.
She had made the abuse public, recorded, and undeniable.
Before leaving, Maya stood in the doorway of the bedroom and looked back once.
She expected to feel grief.
Instead, she felt distance.
The room belonged to someone she had been.
Not someone she wanted to remain.
At the car, Elena asked, “Ready?”
Maya put on the red lipstick using the side mirror.
Then nodded.
May you like
“Now I am.”
