PART 7

David was arrested two days later.

Not at home.

Not quietly.

At his office lobby.

He had walked in wearing a navy suit, carrying coffee, prepared to tell employees he was handling a private misunderstanding.

Two officers met him before the elevator.

Someone recorded it.

By lunchtime, the video was everywhere.

David’s family called it a smear campaign.

Rebecca called it a public lynching.

David’s attorney called Maya unstable.

Then Detective Hale released nothing.

No press statement.

No emotional performance.

Just a court filing.

Assault.

Coercive control.

Unlawful restraint of personal documents.

Threatening communications.

Evidence preservation order.

The facts did what outrage could not.

They made the Voss family panic.

Rebecca arrived at Elena’s house the next afternoon without permission.

Elena opened the door only because Detective Hale had advised her to record any contact.

Rebecca stood on the porch in camel wool and pearls.

“You have no idea what you are doing.”

Elena held the door half open.

“I know exactly what I am doing.”

“You are ruining your daughter’s marriage.”

“No.”

“Your son did that with his hands.”

Rebecca’s face hardened.

“You think Maya will thank you?”

“She will go back to him.”

“They always do.”

Elena’s grip tightened on the doorframe.

That sentence was not a prediction.

It was a strategy.

Maya appeared behind Elena.

She looked pale but steady.

“I’m not going back.”

Rebecca’s eyes moved over her with disgust.

“You will regret this.”

Maya’s voice shook, but she did not look away.

“I already regret staying.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

Elena lifted the phone.

“Detective Hale told you not to contact her.”

Rebecca looked at the phone.

Then smiled.

“You cannot record your way into respectability.”

Maya answered before Elena could.

“No.”

“But I can record my way out of your family.”

Rebecca left without another word.

Two hours later, police added witness intimidation to the report.

That night, Maya opened a small box from the closet at Elena’s house.

Inside were things from before David.

Red lipstick.

A college photo.

A silver bracelet.

A restaurant matchbook from the night she and Elena had celebrated her first job.

Maya picked up the lipstick and started crying.

Elena sat beside her.

“Put it on tomorrow.”

Maya laughed through tears.

“Court lipstick?”

May you like

“Survival lipstick.”
