Maya did not sleep that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, she felt David’s hand in her hair.
Elena sat beside the hospital bed in a plastic chair, still wearing the white blazer from dinner.
There was red wine on the cuff.
She did not change.
It felt like evidence.
A detective arrived at 3:20 a.m.
Detective Nora Hale.
Short gray hair.
Dark coat.
Eyes that missed nothing.
She asked Maya if she wanted to give a statement.
Maya looked at Elena.
Elena wanted to say yes.
Wanted to say tell her everything.
Wanted to say destroy him.
Instead, she said, “Only if you want to.”
Maya cried at that.
Choice felt unfamiliar.
When she began speaking, it came out in fragments.
David grabbing her arm during arguments.
David locking the bedroom door.
David taking her bank card because “wives don’t need private money.”
Rebecca telling her that good wives endured correction.
Rebecca watching David humiliate her and calling it discipline.
Detective Hale wrote everything down.
Then asked, “Are there cameras in your home?”
Maya nodded.
“David installed them.”
“Security?”
“That’s what he said.”
Elena felt her stomach turn.
Detective Hale asked, “Does he control the footage?”
Maya nodded again.
“He said if I ever told anyone, he had clips that would make me look crazy.”
At 5:00 a.m., police requested a warrant.
At 7:00 a.m., Elena drove Maya not back to David’s house, but to her own.
At 7:12 a.m., David texted.
You embarrassed me.
Come home before I make this permanent.
Maya looked at the message and nearly dropped the phone.
Elena took it gently.
“Do you give me permission to screenshot this for Detective Hale?”
Maya nodded.
At 8:40 a.m., Rebecca called.
Elena answered on speaker.
Rebecca’s voice was smooth.
“Elena, let us be reasonable.”
“You called police over a marital correction.”
Maya flinched.
Elena’s voice went cold.
“Say that again.”
Rebecca paused.
Elena looked at the recording icon glowing on the phone.
“Please,” Elena said.
