PART 4

The officers separated them immediately.

That was the first time Maya breathed without watching David’s hands.

Elena stayed beside her while a female officer crouched near the chair.

“My name is Officer Grant.”

“You are not in trouble.”

Maya nodded, but her body did not believe it yet.

Victims hear safety before they feel it.

David spoke loudly across the dining room.

“My wife is emotional.”

“She’s embarrassed.”

“She will regret this tomorrow.”

Elena turned toward him.

“She regrets marrying you.”

The words escaped before she could stop them.

The restaurant went quiet again.

David’s face twisted.

For the first time, everyone saw what lived beneath the suit.

Officer Grant asked Maya if she needed medical attention.

Maya hesitated.

Rebecca answered from behind the officers.

“She is fine.”

Elena snapped, “You do not speak for her.”

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.

“She is my daughter-in-law.”

Elena stood.

“She is my daughter.”

Officer Grant looked at Maya.

“Do you want paramedics?”

Maya touched her scalp, then her wrist, where an old bruise hid beneath a bracelet.

She whispered, “Yes.”

David’s head jerked up.

“Maya.”

It was not a plea.

It was a warning.

The officer stepped between them.

“No contact.”

Rebecca began crying then.

Beautifully.

Elegantly.

“My son has never been violent.”

The manager came forward with a tablet.

“With respect, ma’am, our cameras show otherwise.”

Rebecca stopped crying.

Elena looked at the manager.

“Please preserve everything.”

“Already done,” he said.

At the hospital, the scalp injury was documented.

So was the bruise on Maya’s wrist.

The fading mark behind her shoulder.

The healing cut near her ribs.

A social worker asked whether Maya felt safe at home.

Maya stared at the floor.

Elena held her breath.

Then Maya whispered the truth that had been trapped inside her for months.

“No.”

The word was tiny.

But it opened the door.
