The first hearing was packed.
Restaurant witnesses came.
The manager came.
Two waiters came.
The older woman from the next table came with her husband and a folder of notes because, as she told Detective Hale, “I remember everything when a man behaves badly in public.”
Maya wore red lipstick.
Her hands trembled anyway.
Elena sat beside her.
David entered with his attorney and did not look at Maya.
Rebecca did.
Her stare was full of blame.
Maya looked away.
Not from fear.
From refusal.
The prosecutor played the 911 call first.
The dispatcher’s voice filled the courtroom.
911.
What is your emergency?
Then Elena’s voice.

David closed his eyes.
Not from shame.
From irritation.
Then came witness statements.
The manager described David’s hand in Maya’s hair.
The waiter described Maya crying.
The older woman described Rebecca smiling.
Rebecca’s attorney objected.
The judge overruled it.
Then the restaurant footage played.

Only action.
David grabbing Maya’s hair.
Maya bent over the table.

The silence in the courtroom felt heavier than shouting.
Maya stared at the screen once.
Then lowered her eyes.
Elena squeezed her hand.
The prosecutor continued with the home footage summaries, the seized documents, and the threatening texts.
David’s attorney argued that Maya was emotional and that the marriage was under pressure.
Detective Hale answered from the stand.
“Pressure does not explain holding someone’s documents in a locked drawer.”
“Pressure does not explain repeated obstruction of exits.”
“Pressure does not explain grabbing a woman by her hair in a restaurant.”
Rebecca shifted in her seat.
The judge granted the protective order.
David was barred from contact.
Rebecca was barred from indirect contact.
Maya was granted temporary exclusive access to the marital home under police escort to retrieve belongings.
David looked at her then.
For one second, the old command was in his eyes.
Come back.
Fix this.
Protect me.
Maya looked back.
And did nothing.
