PART 3
The 911 dispatcher stayed on the line.
Elena kept the phone on the table where everyone could hear.
David stepped backward from Maya, both hands raised, pretending innocence had arrived late but still belonged to him.
“She’s exaggerating.”
He pointed at Elena.
“She is always dramatic.”
Rebecca leaned forward.
“She is trying to destroy my son.”
Maya sat trembling in Elena’s arms, one hand pressed against her scalp.
A waiter brought a clean napkin and whispered, “Security is coming.”
Elena nodded without taking her eyes off David.
The dispatcher asked, “Is the victim safe from the assailant?”
Elena answered clearly.
“Yes.”
“He released her after I called.”
David’s jaw tightened.
That detail mattered.
He knew it.
Rebecca knew it too.
She stood and smoothed her skirt.
“We are leaving.”
Elena looked at her.
“No, you are not.”
Rebecca laughed.
“You cannot detain us.”
A man from a nearby table stood.
“No, ma’am.”
“But I can stand in the way until police arrive.”
Another diner rose.
Then another.
The manager moved to the front door and quietly asked staff not to let anyone erase security footage.
David’s face reddened.
“You people have no idea what happened.”
The older woman at the next table answered, “We saw your hand in her hair.”
That sentence landed harder than shouting.
Maya looked up slowly.
For the first time that night, she realized something unfamiliar.
People believed what they saw.
David had spent years teaching her that no one would.
Elena helped her sit upright.
“Baby, look at me.”
Maya’s lip trembled.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena’s face broke for one second.
Then steadied.
“You never apologize for being hurt.”
Police lights flashed against the restaurant windows five minutes later.
David’s polished control returned when the officers entered.
He straightened his jacket.
Smoothed his hair.
Prepared the husband voice.
“She had an emotional episode,” he said.
One officer looked at Maya’s red scalp.
Then at Elena’s phone still connected to dispatch.
Then at the silent room full of diners.
“Sir,” the officer said.
May you like
“Step away from the table.”
