part 6

PART 6
Rebecca did repeat it.
Not because she was foolish.
Because she was certain.
Certainty makes cruel people sloppy.
“A husband correcting his wife is not assault,” Rebecca said.
“Maya has been disrespectful for months.”
“My son has been patient beyond reason.”
Elena closed her eyes for one second.
When she opened them, Maya was staring at the phone as if Rebecca’s words had finally left the private prison of the family and entered daylight.
Detective Hale received the recording within minutes.
By noon, police had searched David and Maya’s home.
They seized the camera storage drive.
Two phones.
A laptop.
A locked drawer containing Maya’s passport, birth certificate, and bank card.
When Detective Hale told Maya that last part, Maya covered her mouth.
“I thought I lost them.”
Elena felt a rage so sharp she had to sit down.
David had not only hurt her daughter.
He had prepared her disappearance from herself.
The footage took longer to process.
By evening, Hale called.
“We have the hallway camera.”
Maya froze.
Elena put a hand on her shoulder.
“Do you want to hear this now?”
Maya nodded.
Hale’s voice softened.
“The footage shows multiple incidents.”
“David blocking exits.”
“David grabbing your wrists.”
“Rebecca present during at least two confrontations.”
“And last month, footage from the kitchen shows him forcing you to kneel while Rebecca watches.”
Maya made a broken sound.
Elena pulled her into her arms.
“I’m sorry,” Maya sobbed.
“I’m so sorry you had to know.”
Elena held her tighter.
“I wanted to know.”
“I should have known sooner.”
“No.”
Maya shook her head.
“He made me hide it.”
Elena looked toward the window.
The sun was setting.
Somewhere across the city, David was probably sitting with lawyers, calling himself a victim.
But now there were witnesses.
Footage.
Texts.
A recorded mother-in-law.
A restaurant full of diners.
And one daughter finally home.
That night, Maya slept in Elena’s guest room with the door open and the hallway light on.
At 2:11 a.m., Elena heard her crying.
She went in.
Maya whispered, “What if I miss him?”
Elena sat beside her.
May you like
“Then we will survive that too.”
