At first I wanted someone else to blame.
Why was Patricia allowed in?
Why didn’t staff remove her?
Why didn’t they protect me?
Then the timeline humbled me.
Patricia was an approved visitor.
Daniel and I had both listed her.
There had been no active restriction.
Before the slap, no nurse had witnessed threats.
I had not told staff I feared her.
Because I didn’t.
I found several small process problems.
Visitor badges were not always checked after shift change.
A nurse had heard raised voices but assumed family stress.
The hospital changed nothing dramatic because the event did not reveal one giant institutional failure.
They reinforced escalation procedures for postpartum conflict.
They offered support.
Covered some counseling expenses not already covered by insurance.
There was no giant settlement.
No secret payout.
No hospital conspiracy.
The hospital could not enforce a boundary I had never asked it to enforce.
The adults who knew Patricia’s history had been Daniel, Rebecca, and Patricia herself.
