That cost him his relationship with Patricia.
At least for a while.
He could not say he saw the slap.
He didn’t.
He could testify about history.
Rebecca’s assault.
Sophie’s bruising report.
His own shove.
His choice not to tell me.
Patricia’s attorney attacked him.
“You are trying to save your marriage.”
“Yes.”
“So you have motive to blame your mother.”
“Yes.”
“You resent her.”
“Yes.”
“You want Ms. Carter to forgive you.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did you see your mother strike Emily?”
“No.”
Good.
He did not stretch.
“Did you know she would?”
“No.”
“Did you believe she was a danger to the baby before that day?”
Daniel paused.
Then gave the answer that probably hurt him most.
“I believed enough that I should have told Emily everything. I chose not to.”
That was the first time I believed our marriage might survive.
