Chapter 24 - THE FIRST SUPERVISED MEETINGPatricia did not see Lily until Lily was nearly two.

The meeting happened because I agreed.

Not because a judge ordered it.

Not because Daniel pressured me.

Because Patricia had complied with treatment for more than eighteen months, her therapist provided an appropriate progress summary through agreed channels, and I wanted to know whether limited contact could exist without surrendering control.

We met in a family-services visitation room.

Neutral.

Bright.

Toys.

Camera.

Supervisor.

Daniel and I both present.

Patricia looked older.

Her blonde hair shorter.

No dark-green dress.

Simple navy blouse.

Lily had no idea who she was.

That hurt Patricia visibly.

Good, bad, fair—whatever word belonged.

It was reality.

Patricia did not reach for her.

She crouched several feet away.

“Hi, Lily.”

Lily hid behind Daniel’s leg.

Patricia said:

“That’s okay.”

Good.

Twenty minutes later Lily handed her a plastic block.

Patricia took it.

“Thank you.”

That was the entire relationship at first.

A block.

No hug.

No grandmother entitlement.

No photograph posted online.

No demand.

When the hour ended, Patricia cried in the parking lot.

I saw through the window.

I did not go to her.
