Chapter 5 - REBECCAThe second incident involved Rebecca’s daughter, Sophie.

Not an assault on Sophie.

That distinction mattered.

Three years earlier, Patricia had been watching Sophie, then six.

Sophie had a tantrum in a grocery-store parking lot.

Wouldn’t get into the car.

Patricia grabbed her upper arm hard enough to leave finger-shaped bruises.

Rebecca discovered them that night.

Patricia said Sophie had been running toward traffic.

Sophie said Grandma got angry because she was crying.

No one knew exactly what happened.

Rebecca told Daniel.

Daniel told her:

“Mom gets overwhelmed. Don’t blow it up.”

I had never heard any of this.

Not one sentence.

When I called Rebecca from the hospital, she cried before I explained.

Daniel had already told her Lily fell.

He had not told her why.

I did.

There was silence.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“Oh my God.”

“Did Patricia ever hit Sophie?”

“No.”

“Did she hurt her?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“The arm incident.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I should have.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I didn’t want you banning Mom from the baby.”

There it was.

I was seven months pregnant when Rebecca had last visited us.

She knew Patricia had a history of losing physical control.

She also knew I already kept strong boundaries.

She predicted that if she told me, I might restrict Patricia around Lily.

She was right.

So she stayed quiet.

Family peace had required information asymmetry.

Everybody else knew enough to make choices.

I did not.
