He hugged Lily only after asking.
Then looked at the dressing.
His jaw tightened.
He turned toward Sarah.
“You lied to me.”
Sarah said:
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
No answer.
“After the bruise disappeared?”
“Evan.”
“After the cut healed?”
The social worker stepped between the conversation.
“This is not the time.”
Evan stopped.
He listened.
That mattered.
He asked for Lily to stay with him pending review.
Sarah resisted.
The temporary arrangement gave Evan additional overnight time while Sarah’s home safety was assessed.
Not full custody.
Not permanent.
Grant was required to stay elsewhere if Lily was with Sarah.
Grant moved into a hotel.
For the first time since the injury, Sarah seemed almost relieved.
