Chapter 4 - EVANEvan Cole was thirty-eight.

An elementary-school music teacher.
Sarah married him at twenty-five.
Lily arrived five years later.
Their marriage ended when Lily was two.
No affair.
No spectacular betrayal.
They became people who made each other miserable.
The divorce was unpleasant but not war.
Shared legal custody.
Sarah had approximately sixty percent of overnights.
Evan forty.
Both lived in the same school district.
Then Sarah met Grant Wallace.
Forty-two.
Operations manager for a regional trucking company.
Confident.
Organized.
The kind of man who fixed a leaking faucet before anyone finished complaining.
He and Sarah married eighteen months earlier.
Evan disliked him.
Grant disliked Evan.
Lily loved both men differently.
That had been my understanding.
Sarah believed Evan was waiting for an excuse to seek primary custody.
He had complained twice about Grant’s discipline.
Once after Lily said Grant made her stand facing a wall for twenty minutes.
Once after Grant confiscated her stuffed rabbit overnight because she would not finish dinner.
Not abuse by itself.
Strict.
Unpleasant.
Questionable.
Evan told Sarah:
“If he puts hands on her, I’m going back to court.”
Sarah never told me that sentence.
Now I understood why an urgent-care record saying stepfather grabbed child before injury frightened her.
Custody.

Not necessarily conspiracy.
But enough to produce a lie.
