Chapter 6 - THE QUIET CHAIRI had heard of it.

Not by that name.
Sarah once said Grant believed children needed a designated place to calm down.
A dining chair in the mudroom.
No television.
No toys.
Sit until calm.
Plenty of parenting systems use calm-down spaces.
That alone was not sinister.
Lily described something different.
If she got up before Grant said she was calm, the timer restarted.
Ten minutes.
If she talked:
restart.
If she cried loudly:
restart.
If she kicked the chair:
restart.
On Friday evening, Lily refused to sit.
Why?
She wanted to call Evan.
It was supposed to be his weekend.
A scheduling change had been made because Evan’s mother was ill.
Lily was upset.
She asked Sarah repeatedly when she could call him.
Grant told her to stop.
She yelled:
“You’re not my dad.”
That phrase triggered him.
According to Lily.
He told her to sit.
She refused.
He grabbed her upper arm.
She twisted away.
He moved her back toward the chair.
Her shoulder struck a metal coat hook mounted on the mudroom wall.
The hook cut through her T-shirt.
Lily screamed.
Sarah came running.
Grant released her.
Did he intend the laceration?
Lily consistently said no.
Did he intentionally grab and redirect her physically?
May you like
Yes.
That distinction would become central.
