“You could have called Sarah first.”
“I did.”
“You could have brought Lily home.”
“No.”
“You could have let Sarah handle it.”
“She had already handled it by lying at urgent care.”
Mom cried.
“You have no idea what it’s like to watch your daughter’s marriage collapse.”
“I’m watching it.”
“You know what I mean.”
Yes.
She meant she was Sarah’s mother.
I was only her sister.
That hierarchy did not impress me.
Then the texts from February became part of the court record.
Mom had to read her own words.
Don’t blow up your marriage over one bad moment.

She stopped calling for a week.
When she finally came to my house, she looked older.
“I thought I was helping.”
“I know.”
“I thought Evan would use anything.”
“He had a right to know his daughter had bruises.”

“Yes.”
She cried.
