Chapter 26 - SARAH AND METwo years and eight months after the pool, Sarah and I sat in the same community-center lobby while Emma and Lily attended a summer art class.

Neither girl wanted swim lessons that year.

Not because of trauma.

They preferred pottery.

Children are allowed mundane preferences.

Sarah said:

“Do you still think I would have brought her back if you turned around?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“So do I.”

That surprised me.

“I kept telling myself I only wanted to explain.”

“You told me not to take her to a doctor.”

“I know.”

“You wanted control.”

“I know.”

She looked through the glass window toward Lily.

“I was afraid Evan would take her.”

“He did take more time.”

“Yes.”

“Temporarily.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Sarah smiled sadly.

“And Lily was safe.”

There.

The outcome she had feared most had not destroyed Lily.

Evan had more custody for a while.

Sarah did the work.

The schedule gradually shifted again after the court found sustained safety and compliance.

Not back to exactly what it had been.

Close.

Sarah and Grant never resumed living together during those three years.

They remained legally married for another year, then filed for divorce.

Not because the court demanded it.

Sarah decided she could not rebuild a household where Lily would always associate Grant with discipline and fear.

Grant did not fight her on custody because he had none over Lily.

He had been her stepfather, not legal parent.

Their divorce was sad.

Not a victory.

May you like

Sarah mourned the marriage she hoped they could have had.

I let her.
