Chapter 25 - EMMA AND THE SWIM BAGTwo summers after the original incident, Emma found the old dark-blue swimsuit in a bag of hand-me-downs.

She carried it into the kitchen.

“Lily’s?”

I recognized it immediately.

“Yes.”

“Can I give it back?”

I hesitated.

Then:

“Ask her.”

Lily came over that afternoon.

Emma held up the suit.

Lily stared at it.

For one second, her face changed.

Then she touched the shoulder strap.

“No.”

“Throw away?”

Lily thought.

“Donate.”

I nearly interrupted.

Then stopped.

Her decision.

We washed it.

Put it in a donation bag.

No ceremony.

No burning evidence.
