Chapter 10 - MY BIRTHDAY INVITATION Charlotte called the next afternoon.

“I want to start over.”
I almost did not answer.
She said:
“Daniel and I have been horrible about money.”
“Horrible is vague.”
“I know.”
“We can talk Monday with Amelia.”
“Can we still do your birthday?”
“No.”
Pause.
Then she said:
“Please don’t make every part of us about the bank.”
That worked.
Because I did not want every part of us to become about money either.
She told me Daniel’s friend had offered the boat.
Sunset.
Cake.
Just us.
I said:
“I don’t know.”
She started crying.
“You’re still my mother.”
That sentence opened the door.
My second mistake was not telling Amelia where I was going.
My third was not telling my neighbor.
Not because adults should report every family outing.
Because I already knew something had changed.
May you like
I felt it.
And ignored myself.
