Chapter 4 - THEIR FIRST STORY Charlotte and Daniel called 911 fourteen minutes after I entered the river.

That fact would matter.
Their story:
I had leaned over the railing to look at a bird.
The boat hit unexpected wake.
I lost balance.
Fell.
They turned around.
Could not see me.
Daniel believed the current had carried me under.
They panicked.
Then called for help.
Charlotte was crying when deputies met them at the marina.
Daniel was calm enough to answer questions.
Both asked whether my body had been found.
Body.
Not whether I had been found.
When the deputy told them I was alive, Charlotte sat down hard on a bench.
Daniel said:
“Thank God.”
According to the deputy, it sounded convincing.
Maybe it was.
People can mean two opposite things within the same minute.
Charlotte asked to see me.
The hospital declined after Detective Benton learned my allegation.
Daniel demanded:
“Who told her she can keep us away?”
Nobody had to tell me.
I said:
May you like
“No.”
That was enough for the night.
