Chapter 8 - AMELIA PRICE Amelia Price had handled Peter’s estate.

Sixty-one.

Short silver hair.

No patience for euphemisms.

I brought her the statements.

She asked:

“Does Charlotte currently hold power of attorney?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have the document?”

She did.

She had drafted it.

General durable financial power.

Broad authority to handle transactions.

But gifting to herself was restricted.

Self-dealing without clear authorization remained a problem.

Amelia tapped the paper.

“A power of attorney is not ownership.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it then too.”

She was right.

I simply never imagined needing the distinction with Charlotte.

Amelia recommended:

Immediate accounting.

Bank restrictions.

Revocation of power of attorney.

Independent review.

Potential civil demand.

Maybe law enforcement if intentional misappropriation emerged.

I said:

“I don’t want my daughter arrested.”

“Nobody said arrested.”

“I know how these things go.”

“No, Ellie. Right now you know how fear goes.”

I stared at her.

She softened.

“Get facts first.”

My appointment to sign the formal revocation was scheduled for Monday.

My birthday was Saturday.
