Chapter 22 - DANIEL’S TRIAL Daniel went to trial.
I testified.
His attorney was respectful.
That almost made it harder.
“You had been angry with Daniel before the boat trip?”
“Yes.”
“You believed he had taken your money?”
“Used it through Charlotte.”
“You threatened to report him?”
“I said I would report unauthorized transfers.”
“You later told Charlotte you would disinherit her?”
“Yes.”
“You had consumed alcohol?”
“Half a glass of champagne.”
“You were standing on a moving boat?”
“Yes.”
“You were seventy-four?”
“I remain aware of that.”
A few jurors smiled.
His attorney did not.
“Is it possible you lost balance and experienced your daughter and Mr. Mercer reaching toward you as a push?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because people trying to save you do not accelerate away when you surface.”
Silence.
The prosecution introduced the GPS.
Messages.
Financial records.
Charlotte testified under her agreement.
Daniel’s attorney attacked her motive to reduce her own sentence.
Fair.
The jury deliberated for two days.
Daniel was convicted on the principal attempted-killing charge and related conspiracy/financial counts submitted to them.
