Chapter 1

My Fiancée Called Me Useless Beside My Hospital Bed—Then I Stood Up and Played Back Her Confession.
Ethan Vale sat motionless in the black wheelchair beside his hospital bed, pale-blue gown loose over his injured body, bandages wrapped around his forearm and knee.
Outside the private suite, Asheville glittered at night beyond the windows.
Inside, Mara Collins leaned close to his face with the kind of concern she only wore when she wanted witnesses.
Then she glanced toward Victor Crane.
“He’s useless now. Just make him sign everything.”
Ethan’s face stayed empty.
But beneath the blanket, his thumb pressed the side of his smartwatch.
A faint pulse of light reflected against the black glass.
Victor stepped forward in his navy suit and placed a legal folder across Ethan’s knees.
“Once he signs, Vale Robotics belongs to us.”
Mara smiled and rested one hand on the wheelchair handle like Ethan was furniture.
Victor pushed a pen into Ethan’s fingers.

He closed his hand around the pen and lifted his eyes.
“Keep talking.”
Mara froze.
Victor’s smile weakened.
Mara forced a laugh.
“He can’t even stand.”
Ethan removed the blanket from his legs, locked the wheelchair brakes, planted both feet on the floor, and gripped the armrests.
Victor stepped back.
Mara’s face drained of color.
Ethan rose slowly.
Steadily.
Fully.
Then he looked directly into Mara’s terrified eyes.
“Then why am I standing?”
The unsigned folder slipped halfway from Victor’s hand.
In Ethan’s other palm, a rusted storage-unit key caught the hospital light.

And the smartwatch kept recording.
